Nexium, marketed under the brand name Esomeprazole, is a medication primarily used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is a proton pump inhibitor that works by reducing stomach acid production and preventing the production of protonated gastric acid. Esomeprazole is the active ingredient in NEXIUM, a prescription-only drug primarily used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in children. It is also a proton pump inhibitor that also works by reducing stomach acid production and preventing the production of protonated gastric acid. NEXIUM is marketed as a generic drug under the brand name esomeprazole.
The safety and effectiveness of NEXIUM have been evaluated in clinical trials. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, open-label trial of 40 mg and 40 mg Esomeprazole, conducted in Malaysia, included 785 children with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. In this trial, the results showed no significant difference between the 20 mg and 40 mg esomeprazole groups in terms of tolerability, weight loss, and overall health. The safety profile of NEXIUM has been assessed in clinical trials. A total of 527 children were randomly assigned to receive NEXIUM 40 mg or placebo at the start of clinical trials or after a placebo-controlled trial of NEXIUM 40 mg. The safety profile of NEXIUM 40 mg showed that it was well tolerated and no serious adverse events were reported in this trial. In a further 5-year study of NEXIUM 40 mg in children, the incidence of esomeprazole-associated diarrhea was 4.6% in the 40 mg group and 3.6% in the placebo group. The incidence of esomeprazole-associated gastric ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was significantly higher in the 40 mg group than in the placebo group. The incidence of serious adverse events was reported in 3.4% of the 40 mg group and 1.7% in the placebo group. Esomeprazole use was well tolerated in the 40 mg group and the incidence of gastric ulcers, esophageal reflux disease (GERD), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was similar to placebo in the 40 mg group.
